Known Issues
CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF PAINT
SHOP PRO
The following are changes in behavior of tools or features
from previous versions of Paint Shop Pro. If a specific result
is no longer possible as the result of a change, workarounds
are described where available.
- Adjustments: an option has been added to the Unsharp Mask filter to
allow for sharpening of only the luminance component of an image. Previous
results are attained by leaving this checkbox unchecked.
- Adjustments: changes were made to the Saturation and Lightness controls
of the Hue Map filter to reduce color clipping problems.
- Adjustments: quantization errors were reduced and a slope-limiting gamma
function was implemented in the Levels filter and adjustment layer.
- Adjustments: several changes were made to the Linear adjustment mode
of the Highlight/Midtone/Shadow filter to correct banding between tonal
ranges.
- Adjustments: the "One Step Photo Fix" script has been optimized
as a standard command for faster performance.
- Adjustments: the Colorize command was changed to better match the lightness
values of the original image. Legacy behavior may
be obtained using the HSL filter in its Colorize mode (set Lightness to
zero and set Hue and Saturation as desired). However, the range differences
must be accounted for Hue (0 to 255 vs. 0 to 360) and Saturation (0 to 255
vs. 0 to 100).
- Adjustments: the Histogram Stretch and Histogram Equalize filters have
been changed to operate on a visual scale instead of a luma scale.
- Art Media: a "PSP 9 Art Media" workspace has been provided for users
who would like to start with an interface optimized for Art Media tool usage.
- Effects: Edge Effects>Find All, Find Horizontal and Find Vertical
have been changed to provide stronger results. If you require the results
of the previous (legacy) implementations, they are available as scripts
and/or as presets in the User Defined Filter dialog.
- Effects: Edge Effects>Trace Contour has been optimized to produce
closed contours.
- Effects: the Aged Newspaper effect was optimized to provide better results.
- Effects: the Horizontal Cylinder and Vertical Cylinder deformation filters
were optimized to correctly produce cylindrical distortions.
- Effects: the Horizontal Perspective and Vertical Perspective deformation
filters were optimized to correctly produce perspective transforms.
- Effects: the Sepia effect was optimized to provide better results.
- Effects: the Skew filter effect was optimized to correctly use the skew
angle entered in the dialog.
- File Formats: the default Chroma Subsampling method for JPEG images
has been changed to "YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1" in order to provide the
highest quality images in most situations. JPEG compression levels have
been adjusted slightly in order to provide equivalent file sizes as previous
versions of Paint Shop Pro.
- Palettes: a new Frame tab has been added to the Materials palette, providing
for independent selection of Hue values and Saturation/Luminance values.
- Palettes: the Histogram palette could sometimes display information
in a misleading way. The drawing of the histograms was changed so that these
problems are absent.
- Palettes: the Undo/Redo history previously found in the Command History
dialog has been moved to the new History palette.
- Scripts: an "AddPSP8FileLocations" script is available to
automate the process of adding resources from your "My PSP8 Files"
folder to Paint Shop Pro 9 File Locations.
- Shapes: rectangle, square, ellipse, circle, polygon and star shapes can now
be created with the new Rectangle, Ellipse and Symmetric Shape tools. The
previous Preset Shape files have been retained for users who prefer to use
them.
- Updates: an automatic updating function has been added to the program,
allowing for automated downloading and installation of updates to the product.
You can set the frequency of the "check for updates" feature or
disable it by going to File menu>Preferences>Auto Update Options.
The updater will run by default the first time you run Paint Shop Pro after
installation.
- User Interface: the "Lens Correction" filters have been moved
to the new Adjust>Photo Fix menu.
- User Interface: the "Negative Image" filter has been moved
to the Adjust>Color Balance menu.
- User Interface: the "Red-eye Removal" filter has been moved
to the new Adjust>Photo Fix menu.
- Web: HTML color values have been changed to lower case alpha characters
in order to comply with XHTML standards.
KNOWN ISSUES
The following are known issues that may affect your use of
Paint Shop Pro 9. We are working to address these issues
in future updates to the product.
- Art Media: minimum sized smear tool may leave transparency in the smeared
area where it should not.
- Art Media: smearing of a smeared area can introduce more pigment than
should actually be there.
- Art Media: when using a large-sized Palette Knife with head loading
set to zero, and using it to smear a thin line of paint, artifacts can be
introduced along the edge of the paint. A workaround is to set the Palette
Knife size smaller.
- Art Media: with autoclean off, progressive strokes from oil brush with
the same color/material may darken slightly
- Effects: the Brush Stroke effect may be leaving an unaffected 2 pixel
border around a processed image.
- Effects: the Fine Leather preview pane does not show an accurate representation
until the Proof button is pressed.
- Effects: the Tiles effect (Effects menu>Texture Effects>Tiles)
sometimes drops lines between tiles. There is a difference between the preview
and the final image. Some of the horizontal lines separating the tiles are
no longer visible.
- Effects: the total number of Presets listed in the Effect Browser may
change after apply/undo of an effect. This can also happen when deleting
a layer after applying an effect and going back into the Effect Browser.
- File Formats: Save as will not update the file type if the extension
is typed in as part of the filename. It will still save in the format
specified in the Save As Type field.
- File Formats: Canon EOS 10D camera: EXIF Makernote data becomes corrupt
after being saved in Paint Shop Pro.
- File Formats: gradients can appear black when saving out as EMF/WMF.
- History Palette: Commands applied to an image prior to a drag-n-drop
command may not be able to be selectively undone.
- History Palette: F3 does not toggle the History palette on/off when
the Browser is open and is the active window.
- History Palette: When set to Auto-hide mode, right-clicking on an item
on the History Palette displays the context menu, but the palette itself
disappears.
- Logitech Mouse: Paint Shop Pro 9 doesnt respect the
Logitech mouse sensitivity settings
- Logitech Mouse: mouse movement may slow down when
Paint Shop Pro has focus; the workaround for this issue is to go to the
Logitech mouse driver settings and remove the
check from Disable Acceleration in Games
- Logitech Mouse: programmable mouse buttons
(double click with mouse wheel click, etc...) do not work in Paint Shop
Pro 9.
- Miscellaneous: in General Program Preferences>View, the Auto Size
preference will not work unless the Fit Window to Image option is also selected.
- Miscellaneous: some peripherals have WIA drivers that do not properly support
structured storage. One example is the Epson Precision 3170 photo scanner.
The work around is to use its TWAIN driver instead.
- Miscellaneous: some program resources have Resource Manager dialogs,
but do not
have cache files. These include Presets, Scripts-Restricted, Scripts-Trusted
and Mixer page resources. As such, the program will not post a dialog warning when
there are duplicate resources
on your system.
- Miscellaneous: temporary files of type BCG*.tmp are written to whatever
folder Windows uses as a temporary folder instead of respecting the preference
for the temp folder location specified in PSP File Locations.
- Miscellaneous: text may not keep its positioning after saving and reopening
in EMF or WMF format.
- Miscellaneous: the Color Management dialog has no help button. Help
can be found via the Help Index.
- Mover tool: the Mover tool will always select a mask layer with data
even when you try to click through the mask where it is white. When you want
to move a layer underneath a mask layer, select the layer you want to move
and Shift+Click drag. Pressing the Shift key moves the active layer. (Note: When mask
layers are created, the group is linked. To move these two layers independently
you may need to additionally unlink the layers in the Properties dialog.)
A second workaround is to temporarily turn off the visibility of the mask
layer.
- OLE: due to an issue with the automation OLE server in Microsoft Access
2003, integration with Microsoft Access doesnt always work correctly. In
addition, if you insert a Paint Shop Pro object into a Microsoft Word document,
Paint Shop Pro can close automatically if no other document is currently
open.
- Patterns: when using patterns from files with transparency, the material
swatch loses this transparency
- Print: printing fails on very large 1 bit .TIF files. A memory error
will be issued when trying to print in "fit to page" mode.
- RAW: Raw Camera support currently supports the following camera models:
Canon 300D Rebel, D30, D60, 10D, 1D, 1Ds, 1D Mark II, Powershot G3, Powershot
G5; Nikon D1, D1h, D100, D2h, D1X, D70; Olympus 5050, 5060, E1, E10, E20;
Fuji S2 Pro, S7000; Pentax *ist; Minolta A1, A2; Kodak 760, 14N, 14c.
Support for additional cameras models will be provided through the auto-update
feature as they become available.
- RAW: the amount of memory required to open RAW images may exceed
the minimum amount of RAM listed in the system requirements, especially
if you have
several other programs open.
- Scripting: recording a script that includes a plugin that has an apostrophe
in its name, (like Somebody's Filters), doesnt enclose the plugin name
in double-quotes, causing an error upon execution. Workaround: Hand edit
the script after recording it, and change the single quotes around the plugin
name to double-quotes.
- Scripting: RepeatLastCmd doesnt function as expected when in a script.
It tries to repeat the command to run the script instead of the last command
executed by the script.
- Scripting: the ReturnFileLocations command doesn't return the folder
count or locations for new PSP9 folder locations: Categories Database, Displacement
Maps, or Mixer Pages.
- Send: If you are receiving an
error stating Can not send files when choosing File > Send, please go to
Windows Updates (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
and get the latest critical updates.
- Undo: the "Compress Undo/Redo Information" option in General
Program Preferences>Undo is not working. It makes no difference whether
or not the option is selected.
- Vector: vector objects with lines 2 pixels thick (and wider) will display
with 1 extra pixel.
- Warp Brush: in very limited situations, the Warp brush can be left in
a state where Apply and Cancel are grayed out even though you have Warp
Brush data to apply.
